You hdd have a quota of space. Usually is good to be separate in 2 parts.One is for your operatyng system and other for files and folders. Is good to keep a separate quota for operating system because in case of crash (a virus for example) you will need to reinstall it and you will lose all informations. Making a partition will allow you to lose just the part with OS and to maintain all datas from the orhet virtual drive.
In fact one single hard disk is separated in 2 or more virtual drives.
